Corrosion has a very high economic impact. Just in France, the loss and expenses it entails are close to 2 billion euros a year.
At the world level, it is estimated that corrosion destroys a quarter of the annual steel production, which represents 5 tons per second.
Furthermore, indirect loss due to corrosion is often greater than the direct loss. Stopping a whole industrial installation to replace a corroded component is often more expensive than the component itself.
